Conquer Your Stress With These 6 Techniques

December 9, 2016

Just thinking about stress or even typing/writing out the word might induce a headache. If left unmanaged, stress could become a silent killer. Luckily, there are a handful of techniques that are easy to do so you can overcome your stress once and for all.

  1. Exercise – A regular exercise regimen is one of the best ways to relax. There’s a multitude of reasons why you should exercise, and alleviating your stress is one of them.
  2. Deep breaths – Never underestimate the power of a few deep breaths. The next time you feel overwhelmed and that life is caving in, just close your eyes and take a few, slow and deep breaths. Keep your mind clear or imagine yourself in a relaxing place like a tropical beach. Do this exercise for a few minutes to realign your thoughts.
  3. Well-balanced diet – The phrase “you are what you eat” couldn’t ring more true. If you’re constantly eating junk, you’ll feel like junk. A well-balanced diet will consist of veggies, whole grains, lean protein (no processed meat,) and some fruit instead of sugary and salty snacks. If you’re running low on energy, eating something naturally sweet instead of energy drinks will perk you back up.
  4. Hobbies – All work and no play will not only make you dull, but stressed. Carve some time out for yourself to do something you really enjoy helps you relax. It could be anything like reading, playing video games, watching a football game, or doing a craft project.
  5. Talk it out – You don’t have to handle your burdens all by yourself; lean on your loved ones for support. Talk to your friends, family, colleagues, or therapist about what’s troubling you. Or, you can write down your experiences. Free-writing is not only therapeutic, but as you let your thoughts run free through a pen and paper or keyboard, you might just find the answers you’ve been looking for.
  6. Don’t be so hard on yourself! Sometimes, the things we stress over aren’t as big as we make them out to be. Of course, we are all guaranteed to face hardship at some point in our lives, but looking at these from a different perspective might make these moments more bearable.
