Looking to Save Some Money Each Month? Ditch Your Landline Phone

April 24, 2019

The rising costs of healthcare and prescription drugs can be a drag on your bank account, especially for seniors on fixed incomes.

We at the Beth Abraham Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing want to save you money wherever you can.

With that in mind, one popular way to cut back on a monthly bill is to get rid of your traditional landline phone.

At first, it can seem intimidating to not have a wired phone, but around 54 percent of Americans have done just that since 2003.

A popular misconception is thinking that dropping your landline means you have to wholly rely on a cell phone.

While you can become a wireless-only household, many are wary of only having a cell phone since several things can happen to them — they can be misplaced, you could live in an area with an inconsistent signal, and they could even be dropped in water and be rendered useless.

One way around the traditional landline is to bundle home phone with your cable television and internet provider. Most will offer deals that will include the home phone for around $10 per month. This is done with VoIP technology, which means that your phone runs through a high-speed internet connection rather than a traditional telephone line.

There are also subscription VoIP plans that do not include other services. Companies like MagicJack, Basic Talk, and Vonage can all provide you with a home phone solution at a fraction of the cost of a telephone line.

You can also use a video and voice call service that runs through your computer, tablet, or smartphone. You can, for example, get a phone number through Skype for a monthly subscription that’s as low as $2.99 per month.

As you can see, there are plenty of options to cut your phone bill and retain your peace of mind. If any of this sounds complex, just ask a young person in your life and they will most likely be able to help you navigate your way through the world of cord-cutting technology.
