Open Heart Surgery & the Road to Recovery at Steuben Center

January 5, 2016

Open heart surgery is any surgery in which the chest is cut open and surgery is performed on the heart. Many people require open heart surgery at some point in their lives. Some of the reasons why this type of surgery would be needed include repair or replacement of heart valves, repairing damaged or abnormal parts of the heart, to put in medical devices or heart transplants.

If you or your loved one has undergone open heart surgery it’s important to know the basics to recovery. You may suffer from muscle or incision discomfort, which is normal. Pain management is an important part of after-surgery care. You may be prescribed medication and recommended certain exercises. If you’ve gotten bypass surgery, you may have some leg pain. Daily activities such as walking should help with discomfort. Lifting heavy objects or standing in place for too long isn’t recommended, but walking daily is great. Here at Steuben Center, a specialist can let you know how much activity would be best for you.

Keeping your airways clear after open heart surgery is also important. No one wants to end up back in the hospital due to respiratory complications. The best way to prevent this from happening is through breathing exercises, walking and coughing. At Steuben Center we can guide you through these steps.

Open heart surgery not only affects your physical, but your mental health as well. It’s not uncommon to feel down after you leave the hospital, but knowing what to expect may help. Try to continue to enjoy your hobbies, get sleep, take walks and visit your friends. Also it’s important to not be afraid to seek help if you need it. There are plenty of support groups and there are also plenty of people here at Steuben Center who have been through similar experiences. Share your feelings with your peers.

The Steuben Center staff will do everything we can to make sure you recover as quickly and as comfortably as possible. If you have any questions about our Open Heart Surgery Recovery program please let us know.
