Stretch Fuel Costs with Smart Driving

We’ve deal with all-time high gas prices in the spring of 2022, with gas reaching an average of $4.62 by the end of May.

And while comparison shopping and joining fuel rewards programs can help you save a little at the pump, changing your driving habits can save you even more by stretching out the gas that’s in your tank before you need to endure another costly fill-up.

Centers Health Care has a look at five ways to get the most out of your fuel costs.

  1. Carpool When You Can

If you’re neighbors with a co-worker or a parent or grandparent taking a child to school regularly, team up to split the duties. Even sharing these trips with one other person can put a big dent into your fuel usage.

  1. Opt for More Deliveries

A subscription to Amazon Prime costs a fraction of a fill-up, and getting free shipping at stores like Walmart and Target is easy to attain with orders passing a certain price threshold (usually $25 or $35). If you can wait a day or two to get some items, just have them delivered and save a trip to and from the store.

  1. Gradually Increase and Decrease Speed

The faster you accelerate from a stop, the more gas you’re going to burn. It works the same way when stopping—allow the vehicle to coast a little bit when you know you’re going to need to stop or make a sharp turn that requires you to burn off some speed.

  1. Check Tire Pressure Frequently

It’s estimated that riding on underinflated tires can cost you to lose around 3 cents per gallon—and that was calculated with more normal prices, so it can be even more costly in the current environment.

  1. Stay at or Under the Speed Limit

In addition to not breaking the law, speeding can also cost you more in gas, as going faster increases the wind resistance your vehicle is facing, which causes it to use more gas to maintain a constant speed.
