Celebrating a Century of Life in Bath
Dec. 10 was a special day for Phoebe Hughes and her family.
Hughes, a resident since 2002 at the Steuben Center For Rehabilitation & Health Care in Bath, turned 100 that day.
Despite her age, Hughes remains extremely active in the community, and has been very instrumental in the planning of new buildings and structures that are in the works at the center.
And she isn’t shy either.
\"I have been a Western New York gal all my life so the Good Lord has blessed me,\" Hughes said. \"My time here at Steuben Center has allowed me to talk to everyone I know and teach the young staff here.\"
Hughes was a small business owner of “Phoebe’s Country Store” in Bath during the 1970s and ’80s. She was also active in the Republican Party, was a former welfare officer and worked for the highway department in Steuben County. Hughes is still an active member of the United Methodist women’s group and she loves writing poetry.
Hughes also loves her family and there is plenty of family to love. She has been married three times, has five children, 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
