Every year on December 1st, Richmond Center, the 372-bed skilled nursing facility on Tompkins Avenue right here on Staten Island, observes and recognizes World AIDS Day and this year was no different. Clinicians spoke with residents and answered their questions about the disease that since 1981, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of this year, nearly 40.4 million people have passed due to HIV/AIDS epidemic and approximately 39 million people were infected with HIV globally. Of these nearly 30 million people, or 75 percent, are receiving antiretroviral treatment. The good news that eight million lives have been saved through antiretroviral and mediations, according to a 2015 United Nations AIDS agency (UNAIDS) report published and broadcasted by NBC News.
