Success stories like these don’t come around every day. At the end of this past February, Dorothy Vasquez, a 50-year-old flower designer from Nedrow, New York, was admitted to Onondaga Center in Minoa, New York. Even though Dorothy has end-stage renal disease, a facility that Dorothy was first admitted to told her that she would never walk again, as she was using a Hoyer Lift to be transferred to and from surfaces, being primarily dependent on machines. The notion of not walking again didn’t fly with the Sigma Rehabilitation team at the 80-bed skilled nursing facility when they felt with proper therapy and Dorothy’s willingness, perhaps a better outcome was in the stars. Both the rehab team and Dorothy were right and now, after hard work by therapy Dorothy’s willingness, she is looking at an April 2024 discharge home. NewsChannel 9
