Slate Valley Center recognizes National South Dakota Day

On April 26, Slate Valley Center in Granville recognized \"National South Dakota Day\" by celebrating the 40th state by making that state’s famous dessert “kuchen”. Kuchen, which is German for “cake” is a very tasty pastry dessert that came to the Badlands in the 1880s from German settlers, originally made by Germans and German Jews in Europe at that time. Typically, kuchen is made with a sweet dough and contains a fruit or custard filling and there are about as many different recipes and styles of kuchen as there are people who make it. Back home in Granville, along with helping to make the dish, residents also learned facts about South Dakota and the history behind \"kuchen\". The residents worked hard baking it and then relaxed by eating it. They did a great job.
