“Spanish With V” – A Language Learning Course for Seniors at Northern Riverview

At Northern Riverview on Route 9W in Haverstraw, the Recreation Department at the 180-bed skilled nursing facility is now offering to the residents a class on how to learn Spanish as a foreign language. Led by Director Lori Silverstein, the course is called “Spanish With V” where the “V” stands for Recreation staffer Vianda Chinchilla. The class is not only for the non-Spanish speaking folks, but it’s also for those who know and can speak the language as this is a course can be a brush up on a language they already have the native tongue for. Residents are given various exercises on paper, as well as receiving a regular verbal teaching course by Ms. Chinchilla. Director Silverstein stresses the notion that you’re never too old to learn, especially a foreign language, because the brain of seniors always need to be exercised. According to the Department of Nursing at Centers Health Care in the Bronx, seniors are encouraged to learn as much as they can at their advanced age because it can regenerate old learning functionalities, as well as open new pathways in the brain. From learning a foreign language and other types of education, such as learning about animals and their habitats, can be fun and educational at the same time.
