Spring Holidays Bring Many Smiles to Martine Center Residents

The spring holidays can be such an eye-opener, especially following a long cold winter. For residents at so many nursing homes, the cold months, especially following the holiday season, can be a tough time even though the Recreation Departments keep on stimulating the minds of the residents who embrace what they do. Many events and activities take place in January and February, but it’s not until March that timely holidays can be fun for nursing home long-term and short-term residents.

At the 200-bed Martine Center on Tibbitts Avenue in White Plains, the Recreation Department, headed by Director Sandy Joseph, drive so many activities and for St. Patrick’s Day, the residents had a blast. With live music and a tasty lunch of corned beef, cabbage, and tasty green ice cream, residents had a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day. So many of these residents took part in a St. Patrick’s Day arts and crafts program where they created their own sayings and drew their own four-leaf clovers. Many of the pieces from the arts and crafts program contained lucky Ireland images such as horseshoes, beer mugs, leprechauns, pots of gold, and even a flag of Ireland. The Recreation team wanted the residents to create their own which individualizes them, something that’s so important as residents of the facility.

“It’s all about keeping the residents active and smiling so these spring holidays can be so uplifting for them,” said Joseph. “So much more is in store as we approach Memorial Day and the 4th of July but there’s so much more that happens in between here at Martine Center.”

As Easter approaches, residents took part in a tasty Easter cookies decoration class on April 4. Here, the residents took the bunny by the ears and created spring-like Easter bright sugar cookies. These cookies will be put away until Easter Sunday, April 9th. All in all, the smiles of these Martine Center residents tell the whole story.
