Troy Center resident shares an inspirational story
This is a story about strong determination. 64-year-old Troy Center resident Charles Jacques would not let his debilitation from a stroke deter him from getting better. Since coming to the 78-bed skilled nursing facility in November of 2018, Mr. Jacques has taken full advantage of the Marvin Avenue facility’s three rehab disciplines: physical therapy, occupational therapy, and especially speech therapy due to his stroke that affected mostly his right side. According to his therapist, Maureen Lammon, his progress has been nothing less than phenomenal. Although Mr. Jacques cannot speak in full, he communicates nicely with the staff and residents, and he does this in a “charades” manner. In fact, Charles is well-loved at Troy Center and has been happily nicknamed “The Mayor”.
“Everyone loves Charles here at Troy Center, and that’s why he’s the mayor,” said Lammon. “He not only looks out for himself to be happy but all of the other residents here as well. He has become their emotional sponge for them, and that’s refreshing from a fellow resident.”
Charles, a former 40-year construction contractor and lover of music, fishing, and the Green Bay Packers who’s originally from Cohoes, New York, suffered his stroke in 2018. Since then, his determination to get better has played a major role in guiding his road, along with the equally determined Troy Center therapy team. With his 65th birthday coming on February 12, Mr. Jacques’ willingness to keep rising above, together with this Troy, NY, therapy department, puts Charles Jacques on the right road to eventually being discharged home through the facility’s Open Door program. 2023 is destined to be a bright year for Charles Jacques.
