St Patty’s Day Fun at Amsterdam NH

After two years since COVID-19 changed the city and the world for that matter, restaurants and businesses in the Upper West Side of Manhattan are finally getting back to nearly pre-pandemic form. The same could be said at Amsterdam Nursing Home on 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue whereby the residents at that 409-bed skilled nursing facility had a blast on St. Patrick’s Day by having a special Irish lunch, seeing a live concert in the community room, and wearing Irish newsboy caps and beards that they created during arts and crafts time.

The Recreation Department led by Yovenie Thakoordeen had many staff personnel on each floor, clinical and non-clinical dressed in green with masks and costumes as well. With the residents observing the Luck of the Irish, fun songs such as “The Fields of Athenry”, “Danny Boy” and “When Irish Are Smiling” played throughout the facility over the intercom system. Finally, residents were treated to a special lunch including, corn beef, steam cabbage, boil potatoes and of course green jello for dessert. For the St. Patrick’s Day concert, the staff served green and white cookies.

“It was like a re-birth of how it used to be around here on St. Patrick’s Day,” said Thakoordeen. “Everyone is having a good time, residents are happier again, all in all, it’s great to see the smiles everywhere again.”
