Science Fun at Steuben Center

Residents at Steuben Center in Bath, New York, are taking part in an excellent, out-of-the-box extended activity program that began on November 20 and the excitement among them is quickly building. Led by Recreation Director Robyn Baty and her team, it is being called Mad Scientist Days and residents are not only having fun, but they are learning a great deal about why certain chemicals react with each other when used together. For example, on Nov. 20 the experiment was an exothermic reaction using active yeast and hydrogen peroxide. The yeast breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. When the oxygen is released, it is trapped in a colored soap mixture, creating a mushroom of foam. The residents had a blast creating their mini \"explosions\" of bubbles and learning all about their experiments and why the reaction happened. Here, resident Mary Greenfield, 85, from Painted Post, was blown away by her experiment.
