Dangers of Sugary Drinks

There are more options than ever to get a sugary fix through beverages, but the problem is that it’s also one of the more concerning health trends facing Americans of every age.

Whether it’s a bubble tea, fresh-pressed juice, or a frozen coffee drink, all that extra sugar can lead to obesity and conditions like diabetes.

Centers Health Care has a look at three hidden dangers of consuming these sugary drinks daily.

  1. Sugar Content Turns Into Fat

Did you know that a 20-ounce bottle of cola has around five times the amount of sugar (65 grams) as a glazed doughnut? And when you ingest that in liquid form, it enters your bloodstream quickly and raises glucose levels. That extra blood sugar that your body isn’t using then gets stored as fat. In addition, your body doesn’t register calories consumed from drinks like it does from food, so you can drink lots of these drinks without your body telling you that you’re full.

  1. People Think Some of These Drinks Are Healthy

When you think fresh-pressed juices, you’re probably inclined to think that’s a healthy choice. And it can be—in moderation. Drinking these beverages daily overwhelms your system with sugar. The American Heart Association recommends that women don’t have more than 25 grams of added sugar per day (36 grams for men), but a typical fruit smoothie or fresh-pressed drink can have that much in it alone.

  1. Increase in Risk of Several Debilitating Diseases

In addition to obesity and diabetes, regular consumption of sugary drinks can also lead to conditions that trigger heart disease, and some studies have found that it can also come with a moderate risk for breast cancer and colon cancer. Researchers say the risk of dying from heart disease increases by as much as 10% per every sugary drink consumed daily.
