Blast from the Past Event for Seniors

CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) — Senior Citizen patients and residents at Corning’s Rehab and Healthcare Center participated in their version of a field day on Wednesday, August 2nd. The event was brought to life by the rehab department, so the staff could inspire a day built around movement and being outdoors.

\"This is our first annual, we’re gonna do this every year,\" shared Administrator for the Corning Center, Kayleigh Smith, adding, \"We’re gonna do care that moves you. So, it’s about getting up and getting moving and getting healthy.\"

The \"Care That Moves You\" welcomed short and long-term patients to enjoy a throwback theme based in the 1980s. Occupational Nurses, Administrators, and the whole staff looked to get their patients moving and grooving in the Southern Tier.

\"We see anybody from, you know, your hip, typical hip fractures, knee replacements, wounds, IV therapy,\" said Shayna Labuski, the Assistant Director of Nursing at Corning Center, adding, \"We do it all. If you need extra help and you can’t do it at home, you need to come to Corning Center because we’re here to help.\"

Events ranged from a waterslide to dancing along with a great 80’s playlist all during a sunny, warm summer day. Hija Shafer, a patient and resident of the Corning Center, said it helped her get out of her comfort zone.

\"It was fun. I love it. It was something different. I’m usually scared of things, but that was, I took the scare away, you know? I took it away and felt really comfortable by doing it overcome more than once or twice,\" said Shafer.

Occupational therapists stood by their patients to ensure a good time. While this was the first \"Care that Moves You,\" event, staff hope to make this an annual occurrence.
