Watermelon Contest at Triboro Center

Summer is all about great times, whether you’re at the beach, pool or on a vacation, memories are born. But it doesn’t have to be centralized to those areas because residents at skilled nursing facilities still enjoy the summer by doing a number of activities, either outside on the patio enjoying a BBQ, having a picnic or when it’s too hot and muggy outside, a watermelon contest works perfectly well.

That’s what residents at Triboro Center on Teller Avenue in the Bronx had on August 3. The competing residents all assembled in the facility’s large entertainment room and they had to eat ten slices in three minutes. Can these residents, who are mostly seniors, do that? That’s a fun challenge and the answer was surprisingly yes. The facility’s Recreation Department created this contest and upon conclusion, everyone wanted another one since this one, the first one, brought so many laughs from residents and staff alike.

So who were the winners?

Finishing in third place was James Galberth, second place was Angel Font and the first place winner, the fastest was resident Ronald Coleman.

All in all, it doesn’t matter who won, what matters that it was a great time together and no one felt left out.

Care. Support. Positive Outcomes. Centers Health Care.

Centers Health Care provides rehabilitation, skilled nursing and long-term care for people with a wide range of needs. Whether someone is recovering from surgery, managing an illness or simply needs more support than can be provided at home, our staff is there to help.

The goal is not exactly the same for everyone. It may be returning home, becoming stronger, staying independent or simply feeling better and more comfortable from one day to the next. There will be progress, setbacks and difficult days along the way. Our job is to be there through all of it, and to help each patient or resident get as far as he or she can.

Sometimes that progress comes in large steps. More often, it comes in small ones. Either way, every step matters.

Our Steps to Home series follows patients through rehabilitation and the journey from hospital to home:
