The staff and residents at Slate Valley Center in Granville were all dressed in orange on Wednesday, March 20, for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month.

Every March, the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA) raises awareness for this unpredictable disease that affects the central nervous system, disrupting the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body.

At many skilled-nursing facilities throughout the country, people who have MS are sadly the ones who are not yet of advanced age and need help doing general tasks throughout the day.

\"There are many people afflicted with this horrible disease in nursing homes, in our community and throughout the Adirondacks and Vermont region,\" said Baily Greenough, recreation director at the 88-bed state Route 40 skilled-nursing facility. \"We think about these folks being diagnosed in their 20s, 30s and 40s and cannot help but wonder how they live with the pain, fatigue, losing their eyesight and it being so hard to move around. It’s just plain horrible.\"

According to the Mayo Clinic, although there are fewer than 200,000 cases per year in the United States, 1.8 million are affected worldwide.
